Earlier this month, a new permanent piece of art was unveiled at Hunterville’s Veterans Park. After two years of planning, a vibrant mural was completed on the side of one of the park’s buildings. Sponsored by Lake Norman Kiwanis Club, they describe the project as seeking “to create a public art piece portraying the values Kiwanis use to make a difference in the lives of children, helping them grow socially, emotionally, educationally and recreationally.”
Artist Julie Anna Kaufman was selected to paint the mural, consequently beautifying the bathroom building for the park. With a background in oil painting, she had to push herself outside her comfort zone to meet the criteria. The result is an interactive art piece that spells out “kids” in objects with deeply representative meanings. This is especially fitting given that Kiwanis clubs are internationally recognized for their involvement in childhood development.

The mural took more than 600 man hours to complete and is a stunning testament to Kaufman’s talent. Park patrons should take it upon themselves to view the mural, spot each letter and its meaning, and even interact with the different elements of the mural (like the growth chart used to represent the letter ‘I’ or to see if they can count the handprints hidden throughout).
Veterans Park is located at 201 Huntersville-Concord Road in Huntersville and is open during all daylight hours.
