Blog > Loving the Lake Life

Southern Living last week published an opinion piece that said something almost all Southerners could agree on: when the Summer sun is high in the sky and the humidity is so intense you could cut the air with a knife, we don’t always flock to the seaside. We prefer the lake. Thankfully here in North Carolina, lake options are abundant and here in the Charlotte-metro, we have Lake Norman in our backyard. Here are the reasons Southern Living provided.
Serenity
Now, there’s almost nothing more calming than waves breaking on the shore as the sun sets, with seabirds calling in the distance. However, lake life offers a different kind of peacefulness. Afternoons spent on a fishing charter (and not having to contend with waves or ripcurrent), relaxing on the dock in the evening, fireflies dancing in the still evening air, and toes sandy from the drop in but not sticky from salt.
Water Sports
On the lake, the list of options for play is endless. Some of our favorites are fishing, boating, waterskiing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and tubing. That’s not to say that you can’t also do these things in the ocean, they just often take more skill, different and more expensive equipment, and more organization. Additionally, lakes usually have marinas where you can rent all of these items instead of needing to own, insure, store, and transport your own.
Charming Towns
Seeing as Southern Living covers a huge portion of the United States, the small lake towns they mention are all over the place. However, they do refer to one of North Carolina’s pride and joys: Lake Lure. Both the town and the lake are iconic, having been the scene for the movie Dirty Dancing. In our own area, we love the charming downtowns of Davidson, Cornelius, Denver, and Mooresville. And that’s just Lake Norman!
Tell us… when it comes to Summer fun, do you prefer the beach or the lake?!
