Blog > Types of Boat Storage
Moving to Lake Norman comes with every exciting thing you could imagine but might also come with additional questions. Buying a house can already be confusing enough but when it’s a lake home, there are extra things to consider. Like, if you have a boat or plan on buying one, would you prefer to have a personal boat dock or deeded boat slip? To the layman, these questions might not mean anything. We’re here to explain them to you!
Personal Dock
A personal boat dock is just that: a private dock that extends directly into the lake from your own property. You walk right out your back door and onto your personal property. These docks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from long straight walkways to docks with more of a U shape. Oftentimes you’ll find boat lifts, gazebos, covered awnings, or swings. Because it’s your private space, you can decorate it however you want and enjoy it with all the ease of walking across your lawn.

Deeded Slip
A deeded boat slip, however, is more of a communal area to store your boat. There’s at least one other boat on the premises but oftentimes it’s more like 20 or 30. It’s not as logistically convenient as being right outside your back door but usually individual neighborhood marinas offer deeded boat slips, so it’s likely a very short drive or walk away. A huge benefit of renting a deeded boat slip is that you’ll probably save hundreds of thousands of dollars on the price of your home. Private docks increase listing prices, so you definitely have to decide how much that convenience is worth to you.

It’s important to remember that Lake Norman is a beautiful and accessible community surrounding the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. So even if you don’t have your own private dock, chances are you’re a stone’s throw away from a deeded slip.
